Process
One of the strengths of the Salt Lake County Art Collection are the countless hours of volunteer time which have gone into the selection and maintenance of the art. This strength will continue with this process. The Center for the Arts Advisory Board and Art Collection Committee are made up of citizens who have agreed to work to enhance the Art Collection. The Center for the Arts Advisory Board has been entrusted by the Salt Lake County Commission to make recommendations regarding the collection. To this end the Center for the Arts Advisory Board created a special Committee (the Art Collection Committee) to carefully investigate all issues regarding the collection. The following process outlines the role of these groups:
- The Art Collection Committee will review the request. Additional information will be requested as necessary.
- The Committee will thoroughly discuss and analyze the request to the best of its ability.
- An anonymous poll of the Committee will be taken. A quorum of the Committee must recommend the request for inclusion to the Center for the Arts Advisory Board.
- Upon submission to and approval by the Center for the Arts Advisory Board the matter will be forwarded to the County Council (for donations over $1,000) or the County Mayor (for donations under $1,000).
- The donation will be accepted if approved by the Salt Lake County Council or County Mayor.
- The contact person will be notified as soon as possible whether the decision is favorable or not.
Criteria
In order to be selected for inclusion in the Salt Lake County Art Collection, artwork must meet the following criteria:
- Of highest priority is the inherent quality of the work itself. The work should be of museum quality.
- The work must have high aesthetic or historical value.
- The work or artist must have some connection to Utah (i.e. be born or have lived in Utah, represent the Utah landscape or portraiture, have worked in Utah, etc.).
- The artist should be a professional, having exhibited his/her work in various major shows, galleries, or museums, or be represented in established collections.
- The work should enhance or compliment the current collection.
- The work must be appropriate in scale, material, form, and content for the general environment in which it is placed (i.e. the work must be appropriate for a government facility).
- The work should acknowledge the practical considerations of quality and durability, ease of maintenance, and public safety. The work must hold up and be maintained in a non-museum setting (i.e. it can't be too fragile nor must it require special environmental conditions).
